“The North Kerala Experience” is a journey into the less explored region of Northern Kerala. North Kerala is rich in nature and culture, with pristine and secluded beaches along its coast, dense jungles and hills along the western ghats and the rich traditions of the Hindu and Muslim communities. North Kerala tourism potential is immense and yet to be explored.
In Kozhikode explore bustling markets and traditional Muslim old quarters, experience ” moplah ” ( North Kerala Muslims with Arab ancestry ) lifestyle and cuisines staying at a beautiful heritage home stay and take excursions around Kozhikode. Wayand is a nature and adventure lovers paradise where we trek, camp, visit waterfalls, take plantation tours and join a wildlife safari. At Kannur we explore some secluded beaches and also experience the captivating north Kerala ritualistic dance form of Theyyam. Kasaragod, the northernmost district of Kerala has the captivating and lesser known Veliyaparmaba and kavvayi backwaters, many secluded beaches, bekal fort overlooking the sea and many offbeat trails make it a beautiful destination to explore. Enjoy activities like camping by a riverside or secluded beach, backwater cruise and stay in houseboat, watch shrimp and mussel farming, walk across long stretches of secluded sandy beaches and visit a sea side fort.
Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur & Kasaragod (9n / 10d)
Day 1 : Kozhikode : Arrive in Kozhikode and rest. Late afternoon and evening visit and explore the bustling market area, the Sweet Meat Street and the Mananchira Square. Later take a walk along the beach. Overnight in Kozhikode.
Day 2 : Kozhikode : After breakfast we visit Bypore shipbuilding yard and harbour. The shipbuilding yard at Bypore makes Uru’s or big arabain trading ships. Later we visit Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary which is spread over a cluster of islands where the river meets the sea. Its home to many species of birds including seagulls, terns, sandpipers, sand plovers, red and green shanks and turn stones. On the way back to town we stop by at Kallai, the timber trading center and visit a Kalari school ( school teaching the traditional kerala martial art of Kalaripayatu ). Evening visit Kappad beach ( the beach where vasco da gama arrived in India ) Overnight in Kozhikode.
Day 3 : Kozhikode – Wayanad : After breakfast we head for the hill district of Wayanad. See the hills carpeted by tea and coffee plantations on this scenic route. Visit Soochipara waterfalls and Banasura Sagar Dam . Overnight at Wayanad ( Kalpetta )
Day 4 : Wayanad : Day to visit Kanthanpara falls and Edakkal caves (prehistoric caves in middle of hill with cave inscriptions inside). Back to homestay in the evening. Overnight at Wayanad ( Kalpetta )
Day 5 : Wayanad : Day to visit Kuruva Islands & Mutanga Wildlife Sanctuary. Kuruva Islands are a group of small river islands made on the Kabini River a tributary of the Cauvery. This 950 acres of evergreen and semi deciduous forests criss crossed by rivulets of the Kabini river are home to the Kuruva tribe. It’s a good place for taking walks through the islands and streams and seeing the beauty of the place. Evening visit Mutanga Wildlife Sanctuary for the evening safari . Take the jeep safari inside the sanctuary and see the different species of birds and animals. Elephants, sambar deers, spotted deer, bison, wild boars, wild dogs, black bear etc. are some of the animals you can expect to see. If you are lucky you might see a wild cat. Overnight in Wayanad.
Day 6 : Kannur – Wayanad : After breakfast leave for Kannur and on the way visit the Kannur fort and beach. See the sun setting into the Arabian sea from Thottada beach . Overnight at Thottada beach home stay.
Day 7 : Kannur ( Thottada Beach ) : Whole day to relax on the beach, village walks and soak up the sun. Evening visit the drive in Muzpalangadi beach. Overnight at Thottada beach.
Day 8 : Kannur – Kasargod : After breakfast we leave for Kasargod. Arrive and check into a heritage homestay / resort. Visit Bekal Fort and Bekal beach in the evening. Bekal fort is the most preserved and well known sea facing fort in Kerala. The Bekal beach right next to it is a long stretch of sandy beach ideal for long walks. Overnight in Kasargod ( Nileshwaram ) .
Day 9 : Kasargod Backwaters : After breakfast we visit the backwaters of North Kerala. Later we take a half day ride in the houseboat and see the backwaters and villages around it. The houseboat cruises the Veliyeparamba backwaters as we enjoy the beauty of this less explored part of Kerala. One can even choose to spend the night in the houseboat. Overnight in Kasargod ( Nileshwaram ) .
Day 10 : Kasargod – Kozhikode : After breakfast check out and drop off at Kasargod, Kannur or Kozhikode. End of trip.
