Karnataka is located in the southern part of the country, it is surrounded by states of Maharashtra and Goa in the north, Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the south, Andhra Pradesh in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west. Geographically, Karnataka comprises of three natural regions – the Karavali Coast, Malenadu ( western Ghat Hills ) and the Deccan plateau. The Western Ghats are covered with evergreen forests and beautiful hilly villages where coffee, spices and paddy is grown. The highest point in Karnataka is the Mullayanagiri hills of the Western Ghats in Chikkamagaluru district which has an altitude of 1,920 meters above sea level.The gahts drop abruptly towards the Arabian Sea, thus forming a natural barrier between the plateau and the coastal regions. The Karavali coast runs for about 300 kms from north to south and is characterised coastal towns and villages, rivers flowing into the sea and swaying coconut palms.
Coorg – Coorg district is located in the south-west part of Karnataka bordering Kerala. Home to sprawling coffee plantations and numerous hill ranges harboring a wide range of wildlife, this is prime trekking country. Coorg also has a large number of plantation home stays where travellers can experience life with a local family.
Hampi – Among a surreal landscape of golden-brown boulders strewn across a vast landscape the ruined “City of Victory,” Vijayanagar, better known as Hampi, spills from the south bank of the River Tungabhadra in North Karnataka. Spread over 26 square kilometers, the ruins of Vijayanagar are spread out and takes a couple of days to explore all of them and serene riverside settings along paddy fields, coconut and banana plantations adds to the charm of the place.
Gokarna – Gokarna, meaning “cows ear ” is a small temple town on the north coast of Karnataka. It attracts lots of travellers who like the relative calm and tranquility of its beautiful beaches compared to the more popular beaches of Goa, 100 kms north. Some of the important beaches of Gokarna are Main beach, Kudle, Half Moon and Paradise beach. The small temple town itself is an intereting place to walk around and explore, with the temple and lively bazaar being the main attractions.
